This novel is about two families and two continents. A man is executed in a Chinese prison and his organs are sold on the black-market. His heart ends up inside the chest of a North American and this transplant shapes the future of the next generations. According to Buddhist teaching if the heart is not buried with the corpse, the deceased will never rest in peace and for this reason the descendants of the executed man have to bring the organ back to China. This is a novel about the illegal traffic in organs, sins that must be atoned for, acts of love that attempt to purge guilt and acts of vengeance that try to re-establish a harmonious balance. Marina Perezagua constructs a plot that is meticulous and disturbing which speaks to what it is to be human, of chance and destiny. This is a dazzling book from an author who is recognised as one of the essential voices of modern Spanish writing.
