Diego would never have chosen his parents. That may sound like a harsh statement, but after we witness his feelings of powerlessness and loneliness, as his one year old baby sister burns up with a fever, on a night when the little Mafalda is caught between life and death, we feel some sympathy for the adolescent. And the feeling grows when we learn that his mother is a famous agony aunt and his father a busy businessman who always has "something more important to do". Fortunately, Diego is not alone and can count on his friend, Gabriela, and other characters who will show more affection for Diego and Mafalda than their parents. Set against a background of gossip magazines, the narrative questions today's values, such as the prioritising of a professional career over the responsibilities of parenthood.
