Situated on the border between life and death, High Heaven is an unusual site of pilgrimage, an abandoned town which holds a mysterious attraction for the suicidal. There a man dressed as a scarecrow plays the part of angel (and gravedigger) and acts with the innocence and ineptitude typical of silent cinema comedies. A spectral gallery of suicidal people wander its streets: a girl who walks on her hands, an old magician on the run from his care home, a porn actress, a waiter with a moustache like Nietzsche's, a bookseller who looks like a detective, a flautist, a drunken clown, a deserter, a melancholy street sweeper, some twins in wheelchairs... Watched over by this angel who sings the same song over and over again, they will all dance a dance of death verging on delirium.
