Rocked by social conflicts and the explosion of Modernism, Barcelona at the start of the 20th century forms the historical backdrop to this fast-paced novel. Víctor Pons works as the head of security at La Rabassada casino, which is opened with much pomp and ceremony in Barcelona on July 15, 1911 and aims to be the new symbol of the city. In this job Pons will come face to face with the greed and madness generated by the gaming tables in all their crude reality, but it is here, too, that he will find love with Carla Torres, a young bourgeois woman. The death of an Italian client of the casino in suspicious circumstances means that Pons must do everything possible to avoid a scandal, and so he hides the body. However, what at first sight looked like a suicide turns out to be a murder, and Pons finds himself in danger…
