"between snakes and strangers" opens with the abrupt, sudden, surprising death of the narrator's father. This tragic event marks the life of the protagonist, an extremely sensitive teenage boy, prone to illness, excessively spoiled by his mother and constantly overwhelmed by the world around him. To free himself from her he relies on the love of Sofía, a teenage girl the same age as him, to whom he is linked in a delicate relationship that constantly breaks and reforms, that is at the same time incredibly wonderful and incredibly tragic. Everything will change when, a hidden piece of family history comes to light not long after his father's death. He will have to take refuge in his sister, Vera, a rebellious young woman, already at university, who experiments with drugs and alcohol and who, deep down, is as lost as he is.
