Nevena's past as a sex slave comes back to haunt both her and her daughter Marina. During the time when she had been forced into prostitution, she had lived in several countries and been owned by a number of masters; although she had been subject to many criminal acts, one very concrete thing that happened during those times has consequences twelve years later. Samuel Montcada, homicide inspector in the Catalan police force, has to rake up Nevena's sombre history and finds himself steeped in the world of organised crime. The inspector enjoys the valuable help of a social activist, Teresa Sacristán, who travels to Bulgaria, Nevena's native land.
