Esteban Montalbán is turning 90. He is not suffering from any terminal illness, but he wants to find the way out of a reality that no longer satisfies him. He comes up against the barrier of the law, however. What he proposes, in legal terms, is not called “euthanasia”, but merely “suicide”, although he thinks of it as simply “dignified death”. Esteban Montalbán asks Hamlet, his Peruvian carer, to help him to die. Hamlet comes from a culture where old age is a value, not a deficiency, and just like Shakespeare’s character he has doubts and problems of conscience which force him to postpone the action time and again.
