The Weight of a Soul introduces us to detective Milton Vértebra, a character prone to excessive behaviour, a loser who has always thought that winning was simply another form of defeat, perhaps the cruellest form.

Antonio Gramsci wrote many letters to his wife from prison. In one of these, he tells her a story so she can read it to his sons: the story of a mouse who drinks a little boy's breakfast milk. When the little boy wakes up and cries with hunger, the mouse asks the goat for milk, but the goat can't give him any without grazing first. But the meadow has no grass, nor the spring any water...

London 1866. Yet again, José Rodríguez Losada is on the run from his past. Having left the family home as a boy, he is forced for political reasons to exile himself from the absolutist Spain of Fernando VII. Now he lives in London, a more advanced city, one which holds the promise of a hopeful future.

Rafael Mendoza, star of the bullfighting world, is found murdered on his farm in Extremaduar. Ginebra, an editor from Barcelona, is given the job of finishing Mendoza's investigation into Federico García Lorca. She will also have to unravel the mystery hidden in some poems from Lorca's 'Conde de Villamediana' and a strange Latin inscription that belongs to the family.
