A wonderful fairy tale in which the boys and girls at an orphanage in China find their parents, thanks to the intervention of some magic birds which live in their garden. Once a month, at the full moon, the birds sneak into their dormitories and, without the children noticing, use their beaks to pull at one of the red threads from which their blankets are woven, and fly off "to search the world for parents for each child!" When the birds find them, they ask them three questions, and if the answers are correct, they are given the red thread so that they can follow it back to the bed chosen at the start of the flight.
A tender story which uses imagination to explain adoption, along with illustrations full of colour and contrast which, page by page, reflect the joy and hope of a new life.
