In ancient times, the ruler of Orcans expelled the wizards from his lands. Now, the vengeance of one of their number threatens his descendants and the peace of his realm. Crey is an orphan who lives with his uncle. When he discovers that people are losing their shadows, Crey feels duty bound to go with his uncle to the castle to uncover the mystery and find those responsible. There, Cray falls in love with the Great Ruler's daughter who is in mortal danger. Crey decides to embark on a quest for a cure for the girl and crosses the borders of the kingdom, exposing himself to the plague. He will learn to confront the wizards and defeat them but, as a result he will contract the plague which leaves him no choice but to wander the kingdom endlessly, not daring to go near anyone for fear of passing on the contagion.
