Ania, the protagonist of this novel, receives a request from her father: that she should go and pay a final farewell visit on behalf of the family to her uncle Agustín, who is at death's door on the other side of the mountains. In order to do so she will embark on a 1,500 kilometre journey, which will be both an escape from the present and a movement towards the cloudy edges of memory. In a series of incidents and fleeting episodes which span the period from the 1960s to the first decades of the twenty-first century, the characters of 'El Sistema del tacto' will experience the agony of their roots and the sensation of seeing themselves as strangers in the places where they live. But this isn't just about geographical areas, but also families, affections and the languages they happen to share.
