Juan Eduardo Cirlot

Juan Eduardo Cirlot (Barcelona 1916-1973) was a composer, poet and art critic. Trained in musical composition by the maestro Fernando Ardévol, he was part of Manuel de Falla's circle. Between 1940 and 1942 he lived in Zaragoza, fighting for the Nationalists, and he was welcomed by the city's intellectuals, in particular by Alfonso Buñuel, brother of the cinema director, who gave him access to his brother's library and introduced him to surrealism. He met André Breton in 1949 and they maintained a close friendship from that point on. He also knew the musicologist and ethnologist Marius Schneider, who trained him in symbology. Siruela publishing house has published his most important prose work 'Diccionario de los símbolos' (Dictionary of Symbols') and his complete works of poetry in three volumes: 'Bronwyn', 'En la llama' (In The Flame') and 'Del no mundo' ('Of the No World').
