Irene Vasco was born in Bogotá and worked with Gian Calvi in his Graphic Arts studio, Casa de Creación. When the Fundación Rafael Pombo first started up in 1986 she was coordinator of its children's programs. In 1988 she, along with other colleagues, founded the Librería Espantapájaros (Scarecrow Bookshop), specialising in children's literature. This bookshop formed the basis for "Espantapájaros" magazine, which was published for several years. Along with Yolanda Reyes, she also founded the Taller Espantapájaros, which became a project specializing in literature for very small children. She has published more than thirty children's books. In 1991 she published "Conjuros y Sortilegios" ("Spells and Incantations") which won Fundalectura's prize for Best Children's Book in 1992 and was included in the Banco del Libro de Venezuela's honour roll of best books in 1991.
