The Adventure of the Ancient Intellectual
Luis González Seara (La Merca, Orense, June 7th, 1936) is a Spanish sociologist and politician.
He was one of the founders in 1976, along with Francisco Fernández Ordóñez, of the Agrupación Socialdemócrata and the Social Democratic Party, as part of the Union of Democratic Center (UCD) in 1977. He was also president and co-founder of Cambio 16 and Diario 16. Senator for UCD for Pontevedra in the Constituent Assembly (1977-1979), Member of the Congress of Deputies (1979-1982) also for UCD although on February 4, 1982 he joined the mixed group, when Francisco Fernandez Ordóñez left UCD, participating in the foundation of the Democratic Action Party. However, when the latter joined PSOE, Seara left politics.
In July 1977 he was appointed secretary of State for Universities and Research and later he was Minister of Universities and Research in the three governments of Adolfo Suárez during the I Legislature (1979-1981). He is currently professor of sociology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where he was dean of the Faculty of Political Science and Sociology from 1971 to 1975. On November 15, 2006 he was elected a Member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.
