Manuel Bosch Barrett

Manuel Bosch Barrett (Barcelona 1895-1961), lawyer, writer and translator. Named by the government of the Republic, between 1936 and 1939, he became president of the Mixed Tribunal of the New Hebrides (nowadays Vanuatu). Back in Barcelona, the experiences he lived during his stay of three years in the South Pacific helped him to write Doña Isabel Barreto, Adelantada de las Islas Salomón (1943), Javier o la isla de Iman (1944), Pensión Ultramar (1945) y Tres años en las Nuevas Hébridas (1945), his best known work. However, the sad atmosphere of the post-war finished his creative stage and he started translating, especially science fiction works. Among his many and excellent translations we can mention: Sinuhé el egipcio, by Mika Waltari; La piel, by Curcio Malaparte; El sello que naufragó, by Robert Graves; El mago, by Somerset Maugham; and many works by Isaac Asimov, the famous “Yo robot” among them.
