Francisco Javier Mina (Navarra, 1789 – Mexico, 1817) was one of the heroes of the Mexican Independence. He took part in the War of Spanish Independence caused by the French invasion. Taken prisoner of war by Napoleon, he was soon initiated into Liberalism – with such masters as Lahorie in Paris, Blanco White, López Estrada and Servando Teressa de Mier in London, Simón Bolívar in Haiti. Encouraged by American liberals and with the support of Lord Holland, he prepared in London a expedition to Mexico in support of General José Ma Morelos. He disembarked on the Mexican coast, fought a number of battles, but was taken prisoner and executed by order of the viceroy Apodaca.
