José Ramón Fernández (Madrid, 1962) studied philology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He currently works for the Centro de Documentación Teatral del Ministerio de Cultura and teaches courses on dramatic writing at the Laboratorio William Layton, Madrid.
In 1993 the author won the Calderón de la Barca prize for his work Para quemar la memoria and in 1998 he was shortlisted for the Tirso de Molina prize for La tierra. In 2003 he received the Lope de Vega prize for Nina.
He has written over thirty books, whether written alone or as collective dramaturgical works; the first piece of the Youth trilogy (with Y. Pallín and J. G. Yagüe), Las manos, won, among others, the Ojo Crítico prize and the Max de la SGAE prize for best text in Spanish in 2002. The authors were shortlisted for the 2003 National Prize for Literature for the second piece in this trilogy, Imagina.
In 2011 Ramón Fernández was awarded the National Prize for Dramatic Writing for his work La Residencia.
Ha estrenado quince versiones o traducciones de textos ajenos en los últimos diez años. Sus obras han sido traducidas al inglés, francés, italiano, árabe, polaco, rumano y griego.
